Wrigley's Launches Alert Caffeinated Gum
Posted on April 9, 2013
Wrigley's launched its new Alert Energy Caffeine Gum this month (April 2013). One piece of the gum contains 40mg of caffeine, which is equal to about 1/2 cup of coffee. Wrigley's describes the gum as "an energy product for adults who consume caffeine for energy and are looking for a portable solution that lets them control their caffeine intake."
The gum is currently available in two flavors: fruit and mint. It is sold in packs of eight.
CBS News interviewed some consumers who are interested in the product and some who like the taste. CBS News also reports that some doctors are concerned that people are already getting too much caffeine.
Wrigely's halted production of the gum in 2013 according to CNN.
Wrigley President Casey Keller told CNN, "When Wrigley launched Alert Energy Caffeine Gum, we took great strides to ensure that the product was formulated, distributed and marketed in a safe and responsible way to consumers 25 years old and over. After discussions with the FDA, we have a greater appreciation for its concern about the proliferation of caffeine in the nation's food supply. There is a need for changes in the regulatory framework to better guide the consumers and the industry about the appropriate level and use of caffeinated products."
The product then returned as Alert Caffeine Gum in 2017 according to Confectionery News. Here's a review from Wreckless Eating.
