JetBlue Makes First Commercial Flight From U.S. to Cuba in Decades

Posted on August 31, 2016

JetBlue started its service to Cuba today. The flight today from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Santa Clara, Cuba was the first direct commercial flight from the U.S. to Cuba in decades.

CNN reports that there will soon be up to 100 daily flights from the U.S. to Cuba operated by a number of carries. Cuba was a prime vacation spot for American tourists before Fidel Castro's communist revolution in 1959.

CNN says many of the Americans traveling to Cuba want to see it before it becomes commercialized. Gerry Hall, a New York educator, tells CNN, "Our friends had been here and said, why don't you come to Cuba before its too Westernized. We wanted to come before you see McDonald's and Walmart and other US companies in Cuba."
