Superhero Costumes Knock Princess Costumes From Number One Spot
Posted on October 26, 2016
Princess is no longer the top choice in Halloween costumes for children. The princess costume reigned as the top choice in the National Retail Federation's (NRF) annual surveys for eleven straight years. Now the princess costume has finally been surpassed by action/superhero costumes. The growing popularity of Marvel and DC Comics films and TV shows has likely played a big role.
Last year's costume survey found that princess costumes were the top choice followed by Batman, superhero costumes, animal costumes and Frozen characters.
This year we have action/superhero costumes at number one, followed by princess costumes, animal costumes, Batman character costumes and Star Wars character costumes.
Here is the 2016 Top Costume List:
- Action/Superhero
- Princess
- Animal (Cat, Dog, Lion, Monkey, etc.)
- Batman Character
- Star Wars Character
- Tie: Witch and DC Superhero (excl. Batman)
- Frozen Character (Anna, Elsa, Olaf)
- Marvel Superhero (excl. Spiderman)
- Zombie
- Spiderman
The list is a little confusing as there are also superhero categories, such as Batman and Marvel, within the list in addition to the overall superhero category. The only traditional monster costumes in the list are witches at number six and zombies at number nine. Vampire popularity appears to fading with children in lieu of superheroes and villains.
The NRF says, "More than three million children will dress as their favorite action or superhero, 2.9 million will dress as their favorite princess and 2.5 million plan to dress as a cat, dog, bunny or other animal."
The annual study was conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics for the NRF.
