Selena Gomez Reveals Lupus Chemotherapy Treatment in Billboard

Posted on October 8, 2015

Actress and singer Selena Gomez graces the cover of Billboard magazine. She's wearing a white oversized pantsuit on the cover. In the interview, Selena discusses her new album Revival and how hate and frustration motivated her. She also reveals that she was diagnosed with lupus.

Selena tells Billboard that she was diagnosed with lupus and has used a chemotherapy drug as treatment. She says, "I was diagnosed with lupus, and I've been through chemotherapy. That's what my break was really about. I could've had a stroke. I wanted so badly to say, 'You guys have no idea. I'm in chemotherapy. You're assholes.' I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again."

Billboard also provided an article explaining the lupus autoimmune disease. A WebMD article says there are three types of chemotherapy drugs that are sometimes used to treat rheumatic diseases like lupus. The drugs are sometimes called immunosuppressive drugs. We glad Selena is feeling better. She told Billboard her lupus is in remission and she is staying healthy through a combination of "diet, routine and medication."

Selena's latest album is called Revival. The cover art for the standard album is pictured below. Selena is less clothed in the deluxe album cover. Two singles from the album have been released so far. They include "Good for You" and "Same Old Love." The next single expected to be released is called "Sober." The album will be released tomorrow, October 9th.

Selena told Billboard that hate and frustration at being talked about in the tabloids motivated her and propelled her to new places in Revival. She says, "I'm so f---ing nice to everybody, and everyone is so vile to me. I've been working since I was 7. I've been a UNICEF ambassador since I was 17. It's so disappointing that I've become a tabloid story. The hate motivated me."

Selena dismissed any ridiculous notion that she's been inspired by her ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber's recent turnaround. The new album and her success is 100% Selena. She says, "No. This is my time. I’ve deserved this. I earned it. This is all me."

Selena also talked about how ugly Internet trolls made her feel bad and hurt her self-confidence earlier this year. She says, "I was in a bikini and got publicly ripped for being overweight. That was the first time I'd experienced body shaming like that. I believed some of the words they were saying. When somebody else has your self-esteem in their hands..."
