Reese Witherspoon Goes to Japan

Posted on June 11, 2008

Reese Witherspoon, an Avon Global Ambassador, was the guest of honor at a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony in Tokyo, Japan where she met female breast cancer survivors. Reese was also there to introduce the region to Avon's first-ever global fundraising product, the Women's Empowerment Bracelet.

Prominent kimono dresser, Midori Yogi, created the gorgeous kimono that Reese were. Ms. Yogi's family has dressed the Japanese Imperial Family for weddings since 1952.

There are very high rates of breast cancer in Japan and the Asia Pacific region and the organizers of the event hope to raise awareness of breast cancer and to discuss the shortage of screening facilities.

"As Avon's Global Ambassador, I'm honored to have this opportunity to meet with such extraordinary women, and experience a highlight of Japanese culture" said Reese. "While their courage is inspiring, I was saddened to hear that only about 12% of women in Japan receive regular breast cancer screening. The lack of testing equipment and breast cancer experts in Japan means that many women here do not have access to the medical technology and care that is critical to diagnose and fight this deadly disease."

Reese is doing a really great thing here. If you'd like to buy the bracelet, you can find it at Avon.com. The bracelet costs $3 and all proceeds go into the Avon Empowerment Fund, a fund dedicated to helping fight violence against women.
