Nabisco Jumps on Red Velvet Trend With Red Velvet Oreos

Nabisco is jumping on to the growing red velvet trend. They have unveiled a new Oreo product, Red Velvet Oreos. The product features red cookies with a cream cheese flavored creme in the middle.
Red Velvet Oreos will arrive in stores on February 2. The limited edition cookies will be available for about six weeks. The red velvet flavored cookies were a big food rumor last year. The coveted cookie flavor has now been confirmed by Bloomberg. The release by Nabisco is timed for Valentine's Day and comes near the beginning of a potential red velvet product explosion.
Red velvet has become very trendy and food companies are catching on. A New York Times story from last year discusses some of the many emerging products from red velvet Pop-Tarts to red velvet lattes from Dunkin Donuts.
Michael Whiteman, president of Baum & Whiteman International Restaurant Consultants in New York, told Bloomberg that red velvet could become as big a food trend as pumpkin spice. If it gets as crazy as the pumpkin spice trend we may soon have more red velvet products then we could every want.
Whiteman says, "We've become flavor junkies. That's part of why you see red velvet staining everything from onion rings to waffles to ice cream to cocktails -- especially around St. Valentine's Day."
