Red Carpet Risk Takers: Emma Stone and Julia Roberts
Posted on January 29, 2015
At the 2015 SAG Awards there was an interesting mini-trend on the red carpet: taking a menswear tuxedo and giving it a feminine twist.
Julia Roberts has never been known for taking big fashion risks on the red carpet, unless you count her refusal to shave her arms, of course. At the London premiere of Notting Hill Julia waved to the crowd and elicited gasps when she revealed her disdain for shaving her underarms. But that was in 1999. She later explained that boyfriend Benjamin Bratt found it a turn on.
But that was years ago and since them the fashion shocks have been few and far between. That's all changed now. Julia looked stunning in a custom couture tuxedo jumpsuit created for her by Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci. The black jumpsuit featured a built in corset and black satin details. She accessorized with black satin heels.
Emma Stone also took a risk in another iteration of the tuxedo. The dress featured a long, double breasted black tuxedo jacket and a sheer chiffon black skirt with a train. That train caused Naomi Watts to take a tumble on the stage. If Ed Norton hadn't shot his hand out to help slow her down, she might have stumbled down the steps into the audience.
Emma's look was created by Christian Dior. We adore Emma and loved her Lanvin jumpsuit at the Globes, but this risk did not pay off. The jacket is ill-fitting and features five horizontal buttons just on top of the crotch area. She had the sleeves pushed up, which looked odd. The sheer skirt and train looked like they belonged to another gown entirely.
Her hair and makeup were flawless and she did look gorgeous. But this look overall was a rare misstep. So, on to the Oscars. Emma is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Birdman. We're sure she'll pull out something fabulous for the event.
