Mattel Launches Tattoos Barbie Doll

Posted on March 7, 2009

It's been a big year for Barbie as she celebrates 50. There was the special fashion show at New York Fashion Week in February. There's the soon-to-be-launched real-life Malibu Dream House, from which several more Barbie 2009 events will be staged. There's a Pink Fiat 500 that Ken will drive Barbie round in. There's also been several new Barbie dolls launched. Mattel has also now created some controversy with its Totally Stylin' Tattoo Barbie.

Totally Stylin' Tattoo Barbie is part of Mattel's spring Barbie line and retails for $20 and up. There's a Barbie Totally Tattoos Nikki doll as well. The dolls come with tattoo stickers as well as a tattoo stamper so that owners can stamp Barbie or themselves with tattoos. The dolls have created quite a stir and there is lots of discussion of the new tattoo Barbie in the blogosphere. Some people don't think Barbie should have tattoos while others think it's not that big of a deal.

This is not the first controversial Barbie. Just recently a thin Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader Barbie doll won the TOADY Award, which stands for Toys Oppressive And Destructive to Young Children.

Mattel defends the tattoos and says they are temporary and can be washed off. CNN says the controversial tattoo Barbie dolls seem to be a hit. They say the tattoos Barbie is selling out in some retail locations.

Here's a news report about the controversy over Totally Stylin' Tattoo Barbie.
