Kodak to Release New Super 8 Camera This Fall

Posted on March 7, 2016

Kodak announced plans to revive the Super 8 film and launch a new Super 8 camera at the 2016 CES. Kodak displayed an early prototype of a new Kodak Super 8 camera that combines the classic features of a Super 8 with digital functionality.

Big Hollywood directors are excited to see the Super 8 revival. Christopher Nolan says, "The news that Kodak is enabling the next generation of filmmakers with access to an upgraded and enhanced version of the same analog technology that first made me fall in love with cinematic storytelling is unbelievably exciting."

Star Wars: The Force Awakens director JJ Abrams also weighed in: "The fact that Kodak is building a brand new Super 8 camera is a dream come true. With a gorgeous new design, interchangeable lenses and a brilliant scheme for development and delivery of footage, this camera appears to be the perfect bridge between the efficiency of the digital world and the warmth and quality of analog."

Eastman Kodak CEO Jeff Clarke says in a statement, "It is an ecosystem for film. Following the 50th anniversary of Super 8, Kodak is providing new opportunities to enjoy and appreciate film as a medium."

NPR recently interviewed experts about the return of the analog technology. The New Yorker's David Sax calls it the new camera a "mashup of analog and digital technology."

Kodak has set up a website for the new camera here. The site says the Kodak lab will process your film for you. Your developed film will be mailed back to you and you will be provided with a password to retrieve your digital scans from the cloud. Pricing for the camera and film have not yet been announced. The camera will be released this fall. Take a look:
