Nordstrom has revealed the footprint for its upcoming massive store in Manhattan. This will be the luxury retailer's very first store in New York City. The store is slated to open in 2019.
The huge store will encompass four properties in the Columbus Circle neighborhood of Manhattan along Broadway between West 57th and West 58th Streets. It will have seven floors with two below street level in five above. The total amount of retail space is 363,000 square-feet.
Pete Nordstrom, co-president, Nordstrom, Inc., says in the announcement, "We're building in the context of the world's greatest stores in the best retail city in the world and our ambition is to create an entire experience that reflects the best of what we have to offer. We think the modern exterior glass design combined with the historical renovations honor both the past and future of Manhattan. We look forward to the day when we can open our doors and welcome customers."
Nordstrom hired designer James Carpenter to design enormous glass facades at the base of Central Park Tower. The seven-level glass waveforms facades were created to catch light as it shines through the east-west axis of West 57th and West 58th Streets. Nordstrom says the waveforms will also provide an interactive viewing experience for customers inside the store and at street level.
Carpenter says in a statement, "The facades have a quality of fluidity. From within, you can step into the waveforms and experience the dramatic views up and down the street while simultaneously, from outside, your presence humanizes the facades. The design aims to visually invite people to envisage the store as a simultaneously accessible and urbane public space."
Update: The store opened in October 2019. Here's a look inside the huge new flagship store.
