Macy's to Close 66 Stores

Posted on January 11, 2025

Macy's announced it is closing 66 stores in a press release. The store closings are part of the retailer's Bold New Chapter plan to return to sustainable, profitable sales growth.

Tony Spring, chairman and chief executive officer of Macy’s, Inc., says in the announcement, "Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go–forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service."

A CNN story says an active investors group is pushing Macy's to close stores in key locations and lease to subsidiaries to cash in on its valuable real estate holdings.

The store closings include multiple closures in California, Florida, Georgia, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas and Washington.
