Jessica Alba Talks Chubby Childhood and Internet Research With Self

Posted on September 23, 2015

Jessica Alba covers the October 2015 issue of Self magazine. She wears a two-piece swimsuit on the cover. Self calls Jessica "a billion dollar brand" because of her non-toxic consumer goods company, The Honest Company, which Self says is worth $1.7 billion.

The Honest Company is Jessica's full-time job these days. She told Self the inspiration began when she broke out in hives while pregnant after using a baby laundry detergent. Jessica tells Self in the interview, "I was horrified by the realities around the use of chemicals, and also the link that these chemicals have to a lot of illnesses, from obesity to lung disease to cancer, allergies, eczema-all of it. I was bringing this little person into the world and I thought, I want her to be healthy."

She does a lot of online research to find product information and research chemicals. Her husband, Cash Warren, helps keep her from overdoing it. She says, "My husband complains about my research. I just go into a hole of Google. He's like, 'The light! In the corner of my eye!' But it's hard to turn it off."

Jessica also reveals in the interview that she was chubby as a kid and suffered from asthma and pneumonia. She says she would carry a "breathing machine" to soccer games. Jessica says, "I was on a swim team, and I was chubby and slow and dead last-a full two laps last. I was crying and couldn't breathe. My mom and dad were like, 'You started this, you're going to finish it!' My parents made me stick to stuff, pick myself up. It's painful to go through, but I appreciate that tough love."

In addition to The Honor Company, Jessica has also been busy with her acting career. Her films this year include Barely Lethal and Entourage. She also starred in Taylor's star-studded "Bad Blood" music video. She has three films coming out next year: The Veil, Dear Eleanor and Mechanic: Resurrection.

Jessica took Self through her morning routine in this video. She starts hot yoga at 5:15 a.m. a couple days a week. There's lots of yawning involved and strong coffee. She also shared her daily beauty routine, which takes five to ten minutes. Take a look:
