Jennifer Lawrence Named as Co-Chair of the 2015 Met Gala
Posted on September 14, 2014
Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence has been named as one of the co-chairs for the 2015 Metropolitan Museum of Art Gala. The other chairs are Anna Wintour, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, Hong Kong billionaire Silas Chou, Chinese actress Gong Li and Rupert Murdoch's ex-wife Wendi Murdoch.
The theme of the annual exhibition and the ball will be "Chinese Whispers: Tales of the East in Art, Film, and Fashion." The exhibition will be held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Anna Wintour Costume Center. The exhibition is being produced by Andrew Bolton who has been the curator of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute since 2006.
The exhibition's name comes from the game telephone in which people repeat a set of facts in a circle; by the time the last person hears the statement it's always different from the original message. The British call this game Chinese Whispers. The exhibition will look at how Westerners "have understood, misunderstood, and appropriated Chinese culture."
The title of the exhibition has raised some eyebrows, but the fact that Silas Chou and Gong Li are co-chairing the Ball has helped allay concerns about the potential for diplomatic gaffes. We assume that all the exhibits and the tone of the narrative has been cleared with the Chinese sponsors who are underwriting the event.
The exhibition will include fabulous couture and clothing from international designers, as well as paintings, decorative arts and video. This is Anna Wintour's show and her choice of co-chairs is quite interesting. Anna is fiercely loyal to her friends and clearly she is supporting Jennifer Lawrence after the infamous celebrity phone hacking incident. She is also supporting John Galliano. A photo of the gorgeous gown he designed while working at Christian Dior in fall 1997 is the featured image for the exhibition. Galliano's career has still not recovered since his conviction by a French court for making anti-Semitic statements in a bar in Paris. But Anna seems determined to get his career back on track.
Silas Chou is a perfect choice to Chair the Ball. But Wendi Murdoch's selection is a surprise. Apparently Wendi got Anna Wintour in the divorce settlement. The Gala will be held on n May 4, 2015 and will be the hottest ticket in town. The exhibition is going to be superb. The designs will include gowns from designers such as Alexander McQueen and Laurence Xu. The video and decorative arts portion of the exhibit will be displayed in the Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch Gallery of the costume center, as well as in the Chinese galleries. Chinese filmmaker Wong Kar-wai is overseeing the art direction of the film and decorative arts portions of the show.
