Ghost Pumpkins: White is the New Orange

Posted on October 27, 2005

Everyone knows about orange pumpkins but what about white pumpkins? They have a similar shape but are white instead of orange. CBS News is reporting about the growing trend towards white pumpkins which are also known as ghost pumpkins.

The albinos are called ghost pumpkins, snowballs, luminas or Caspers -- presumably a reference to the friendly ghost. And the ones about the size of a baseball? Baby Boos.

White pumpkins are slightly more expensive than their orange cousins, but parents and party planners say they're more ghoulish and offer a better canvas for drawing or painting jack-o'-lantern faces.

Gensler Gardens grew 6,000 white pumpkins this year according to the story. This is six times the amount they cultivated the previous year. They made more because the pumpkins were such a big hit. Scott Gensler told CBS News they may grow 20,000 next year.

A search for ghost pumpkin seeds will get you results from many farms that sell the seeds so you can grow them at home. They are becoming popular enough that a store near you is likely to have some for Halloween but the smaller ghost pumpkins are a faster crop then the large orange pumpkins - so you might want to try growing them in your backyard.
