U.S. Department of Transporation Now Recommending Rear-View Cameras

Posted on September 26, 2013

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is now recommending rear-view cameras on new U.S. cars. This is not enough for some consumer groups.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) is being sued by consumer groups to make the recommendation a requirement on new cars.

CNN reports that 17,000 people are injured and 200 people are killed every year in back-over crashes. 44% of the deaths are children under 5. The rear-view camera systems do seem to be an fairly easy way and inexpensive way to significantly reduce many of these accidents. SUVs have especially large blind zones in the back.
