Christian Dior: Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2011

Posted on January 25, 2011

For the Christian Dior 2011 Spring Haute Couture show in Paris, John Galliano said he was inspired by the work of the legendary illustrator Rene Gruau.

Gruau collaborated with Christian Dior himself for most of his career. Galliano saw an exhibition of his work and immediately knew he wanted to translate the look of pen and ink drawings into real fashion. Galliano himself is sporting a dramatic new, darker hairdo to go with the collection.

The collection is just stunning. The New Look is very much in evidence, from the lines of the clothes to the styling of the models' hair and makeup. Even the gloves were used to create classic lines. Karlie Kloss opened the show in a fantastic red tulle coat. She showed Hilary Alexander her amazing red eyebrows, which are actually paper. Pat McGrath created the look for the show.

Elegant day dresses, chic cocktail dresses and fabulous, frothy ballgowns paraded down the runway. The clothes were simply beautiful. This is what haute couture should be: dramatic, with exquisite handwork and perfect lines. Take a look:
