Chanel Haute Couture: Fall/Winter 2010/2011
Posted on July 10, 2010
You know those prognosticators that say they can predict what the stock market and the economy will do based on the hemlines in the couture shows? Well, if they're right the Great Recession is only getting warmed up. The collection was polished and conservative.
The hemlines were longer, although the jackets and sleeves were shorter. There was a buttoned up feel about the clothes, which were rendered in luxurious fabrics with simple lines. The embroidery and applique work was beautiful. In place of black, we got navy blue which we just love. Navy blue is such a great color and it's hard to find.
Karl Lagerfeld sent out an haute couture collection without even one little black dress: he told Hilary Alexander that everyone already has one, which we suppose is true. But we do love Karl's little black dresses.
There were no giant icebergs this time. Instead the models walked at the Grand Palais in Paris under the watchful gaze of a giant gold lion, which was replicated from a small bronze statue found in Coco Chanel's rue Cambon apartment (she was a Leo). Don't miss the groom at the end: he wears a lion's head.
