Barbie has been a singer or popstar more than once. The doll pictured above is from 1986 when Barbie had her own group, Barbie & The Rockers.
Barbie was even a rapper before hip hop dominated the music scene. She was called Rappin' Rockin' Barbie.
In 1998, Mattel released a Barbie Leader Singer doll. This doll had a futuristic outfit and an arrow shaped guitar.

In 2005, Mattel released a Barbie American Idol doll. The dolls included a karaoke machine that played "Ladies Night," and an extra outfit. CNN has a report on these dolls here.

In 2011, a new Barbie I Can Be A Rockstar doll was released. The doll included unlockable online content and a microphone and mic stand. This hip Barbie carried a pink guitar with a Barbie silhouette.
There was also a picture book with stickers from Golden Books called I Can Be a Rock Star.
The book can be found on Amazon.
Barbie also played a popstar in the DVD film, The Princess and the Popstar.
