Astronaut Barbie: Barbie Ventures Into Space
Posted on February 13, 2014
Astronaut Barbie was released by Mattel in 1965. This was during the heart of the space race. NASA was up against the Soviet lunar programs in a race to be the first to put a man on the moon.
Neil Armstrong walked on the moon on July 20, 1969, but Mattel and Barbie were inspiring girls that they too could one day walk on the moon and travel in space with the iconic Astronaut Barbie doll.
This is not the only version of Astronaut Barbie. A different look of the doll can be found here on BusinessWeek.com. A vintage reproduction of the doll was made in 2009 with a silvery metallic spacesuit, white helmet and zip boots. It can be found here on BarbieCollector.com.
Barbie also ventured into space again in 1986. This time she had pink Barbie flag to plant on the surface of an unexplored moon or planet.
Update 8-6-13: Mattel has launched Mars Explorer Barbie in collaboration with NASA.
