Apple Closing Stores Again as Covid-19 Cases Spike in Several U.S. States

Posted on June 19, 2020

Cases of the Covid-19 coronavirus as spiking again in several U.S. states. These spikes are linked to the reopening activity in these states.

CNBC reports that eleven Apple stores are closing in four states starting Saturday, June 19. The states are Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Arizona.

There are many states where cases are spiking so it is possible more Apple stores will re-close. Some of the other states include Alabama, Texas and Oklahoma. It is no surprise that these states are also states that reopened the earliest. It is not clear why Apple stores currently remain open in these states.

Apple said in a statement, "Due to current Covid-19 conditions in some of the communities we serve, we are temporarily closing stores in these areas. We take this step with an abundance of caution as we closely monitor the situation and we look forward to having our teams and customers back as soon as possible."

In a previous statement, Apple's Tim Cook talked about the challenge of Covid-19 and the uncertainty about when it will finally be behind us.

There is no mistaking the challenge of this moment. The entire Apple family is indebted to the heroic first responders, doctors, nurses, researchers, public health experts and public servants globally who have given every ounce of their spirit to help the world meet this moment. We do not yet know with certainty when the greatest risk will be behind us.
Apple initially closed all stores outside of China on March 14, 2020 because of Covid-19. Recently, Apple had started reopening stores but now some are closing again. It is possible other retailers will follow Apple's lead and shut back down.
