Amazon Greatly Expands Fashion Category and Launches Seven Fashion Brands

Posted on February 25, 2016

Amazon has been rapidly expanding its fashion stores and fashion offerings. There are also reports that Amazon has launched seven private label brands. Amazon Fashion is the name of Amazon's apparel and accessories department.

A report in WWD says the giant online store has quietly launched seven private label fashion brands and possibly more. WWD says the following brands have been launched: ranklin & Freeman, Franklin Tailored, James & Erin, Lark & Ro, North Eleven, Scout + Ro and Society New York. The brands cover everything from children's clothing to women's apparel and accessories. The main focus is dresses and handbags.

Amazon has also greatly expanded its fashion store over the past couple years. Re/code reports that there were 30 million apparel and accessory items listed on Amazon.com during the 2015 holiday season. This is a 91% jump over the prior year. Re/ccode says this is equal to the total number of items sold in 250 Walmart supercenters combined.

Amazon is obviously very serious about fashion. By expanding the number of items they are selling and offering their own products they should generate huge clothing sales. Those who remember the early days of ecommerce will recall the days when people did not buy clothes online. Times have changed and Amazon is looking to dominate in the category. Re/code says equity research analysts Cowen and Company is projecting Amazon could become the No. 1 seller of clothing in the U.S. sometime this year.

Amazon also now has regular fashion features. Currently they have a feature on spring fashion trends called "5 Big Ideas for Spring." It features model Coco Roach and says, "We promise: Yo don't have to be Coco Rocha to pull them off." You can also shop the looks Coco is modeling.
